How dark mode for websites works
Most websites only come in one colour scheme, usually bright white. A dark mode extension recolours the page for you: light backgrounds become dark, dark text becomes light, and links and buttons keep their meaning.

How to turn on dark mode in Chrome for every website
- Add NeoReader Dark Mode to Chrome, Edge or Firefox.
- Open a bright website and click the extension button, then the big switch, or press Alt + Shift + N.
- Switch on Always dark to keep that site dark on every visit. Your browser asks to allow that one site.
- Adjust brightness, contrast or warmth if the page needs it.
- Open Settings to choose Dark everywhere or a schedule.
Chrome's built-in dark mode, and why it isn't enough
Setting Chrome, Windows or macOS to dark changes the browser's menus and tabs, and websites that support dark themes follow along. Most websites do not, so they stay bright white.
Chrome also has a hidden flag, Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents, at chrome://flags. It forces every page dark, but it applies to all sites at once, cannot be adjusted per site, sometimes darkens images badly, and can disappear in a future Chrome update. An extension gives you the same result with control over which sites, how dark, and when.
Only the sites you choose
Many dark mode extensions ask to read and change all your data on every website the moment you install them. NeoReader Dark Mode installs with no site access at all.
