Barcodes in Shopify
Every Shopify product and variant has a barcode field, labelled for ISBN, UPC, GTIN and similar, in the inventory section. Whatever you type there is what Shopify POS matches when you scan the item at a till, and what goes to Google Shopping and other sales channels.
The Shopify barcode generator here turns that number into a printable barcode. Use numbers you own: GTINs licensed from GS1 if you sell through other retailers or Google, or your own SKUs if the barcodes are only for your stockroom and POS.
How to add barcodes to Shopify products
- Get your numbers: GS1 GTINs for retail, or a list of your own SKUs for internal use.
- In Shopify admin, open each product or variant and type the number into the Barcode field.
- Here, pick EAN-13 or UPC-A for GTINs, or Code 128 for SKUs with letters.
- Type the same number and download the barcode as SVG or PNG.
- Print it on your labels or packaging, and scan one with Shopify POS to check it matches.
Amazon barcodes and FNSKU labels
Amazon listings normally need a GTIN, such as a UPC or EAN, that is registered to your brand with GS1. Amazon checks this, so a number from an unofficial reseller or a random barcode generator can get a listing removed. Brands without GTINs can apply for an exemption.
If you use Fulfilment by Amazon, Amazon also issues an FNSKU for each product, usually starting X00. It is a Code 128 barcode. You can print the labels from Seller Central, or draw the same number here with Code 128 when you need the barcode inside your own label or packaging design.
Scanning barcodes for Shopify and Amazon
Shopify POS reads barcodes with a connected scanner or the phone camera, and matches them against the Barcode field. If a scan returns nothing, the printed number and the field usually differ by a leading zero or a missing check digit.
Amazon sellers often need to check a barcode before sending stock. Our online barcode scanner reads UPC, EAN and Code 128 from a photo or your camera in the browser, with no app to install.
