How to scan a QR code on a Mac
macOS does not come with a dedicated QR code scanner, and the Camera-style apps such as Photo Booth do not read codes. This Mac QR code scanner fills the gap. It runs in your browser and reads codes from the screen, from files and from the camera, on any MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac or Mac mini with a webcam.
- Press Cmd + Ctrl + Shift + 4 and drag a box around the QR code. This copies it to the clipboard.
- Open this page and press Cmd + V to paste.
- Read the result. Links are shown in full with a safety check before you open them.
- For a printed code, choose the camera option, allow access in the browser, and hold the code in front of the camera.
Other ways to read a QR code on macOS
The browser scanner is the quickest route when the code arrived by email, in a PDF, or in a Zoom or Teams call and you want the link on your Mac.
- Your iPhone: point the Camera app at the code on your Mac screen. Handy, but the link then opens on the phone, not the Mac.
- Saved images: drag a PNG, JPG or HEIC file from Finder onto the scanner, or choose it from the file picker.

Tips for scanning with a MacBook camera
- The first time, your browser asks for camera access. If you said no, allow it again in the browser's site settings, and check System Settings, Privacy and Security, Camera.
- The FaceTime camera sits at the top of the lid, so hold the code up at eye level rather than flat on the desk.
- Keep the code 20 to 30 cm away. Too close and it will not focus.
- Face a window or lamp so the code is lit from the front.
- Glossy cards and phone screens reflect light. Tilt them a little until the glare moves off the code.
