What a dynamic QR code is
A dynamic QR code does not contain your content. It contains a short link to the provider's server, and that server forwards each scan on to your real address. A dynamic QR code generator is really a redirect service with a QR code on the front.
The redirect is what makes dynamic codes useful. You can change the link behind a printed code without reprinting it, and the server can log each scan, which is how QR code tracking and analytics work. It is also the weak point: when the redirect stops, every printed copy stops with it.
A static code works the other way round. The link, Wi-Fi details or contact card is written into the pattern itself, so a phone reads it directly with no server involved. It cannot be edited after printing, but there is also nothing that can expire, show an advert or log your customers.
When you need a dynamic code
- The code is printed at scale, on packaging or permanent signs, and the destination is likely to change.
- You need scan analytics per code, such as counts by day or by location.
- You run seasonal offers from the same printed material.
- You want the option to fix a wrong link after printing.
When a static code is better
A static code that points at a page you control, such as yoursite.com/offer, gives you most of the flexibility: change the page, not the code.
- Wi-Fi, contact cards, text and phone numbers need no server at all, and work offline.
- The destination is stable, such as your homepage, a review page or a booking form.
- Privacy matters: nobody logs who scans your code.
- You want it to last: no subscription, no trial and no provider that can switch it off.
How to make a trackable QR code for free today
This counts visits rather than raw scans, but it needs no redirect, no extra account and nothing between your customers and your site.
- Add tracking tags to your link, for example ?utm_source=qr&utm_medium=print&utm_campaign=spring.
- Paste the tagged link into the generator above.
- Style the code and download it.
- Open your website analytics and filter by that source to count visits from the code.
Choosing a dynamic QR code generator
Before picking the best dynamic QR code generator for you, check what happens when a trial ends or you stop paying. Printed codes that die with a lapsed account are the most common complaint.
Check too if the free tier shows adverts to the people scanning. One large service shows a three-second advert before its free dynamic codes open. Ask if you can use your own domain, export your scan data, and move codes to another provider, and what each code or each scan costs once you grow.
Dynamic codes are coming soon with NeoReader Pro: editable destinations, scan analytics and no adverts for the people who scan. Until then, the generator above makes static codes that are free and never expire.
