NeoReader Dark Mode ("the extension") is published by NeoReader, operator of neoreader.com.
What the extension does with your data
- No access to websites until you choose. At install the extension can't see or change any
website. Clicking its button or pressing its shortcut darkens only the tab you're on (the
browser's
activeTabpermission). - Per-site access, only when you ask. Choosing "Always dark" on a site asks your browser for access to that one site, so it can be dark before the page appears. "Dark everywhere" asks for access to all websites, only when you switch it on. Stopping or removing a site gives the access back.
- It works with the page's styles, not its content. To recolour a page it reads the page's style sheets (colours, backgrounds, borders) and writes dark versions of them into the page, and it checks the page's background colour to leave already-dark sites alone. Nothing about the page is stored or sent to us.
- Style sheets and background images may be downloaded again. When a page's style sheet or a background image comes from another server (a CDN), the extension may download that same file again from that server to recolour it. These requests go only to the servers the page itself uses, carry no cookies or login details, and are limited to CSS and image files. They are only possible for sites you have allowed (or that allow it themselves).
- Settings stay on this device: your look (mode, sliders), schedule, your list of sites and a list of sites seen to be dark already, in the browser's local extension storage.
Data we collect
None. The extension sends nothing to us or to anyone else, loads no remote code and contains no analytics. Its only network requests are the style sheet and image downloads described above.
Open-source software
The colour engine is Dark Reader (MIT License), bundled
with the extension together with its per-site fixes; nothing is loaded from Dark Reader's servers.
