How to scan a QR code on a laptop: Windows, Mac and Chromebook
To scan a QR code on a laptop, screenshot the code and paste it into a browser QR scanner, or hold a printed code up to the webcam. Windows 11 and ChromeOS also have a scan mode in their Camera apps. Macs have no built-in scanner, so a browser scanner does the job.

Two kinds of QR code, two methods
Before you pick a method, check where the code is. A code on paper, a card, a parcel or another screen needs a camera, so you use the laptop webcam. A code that is already on your laptop screen, in an email, a PDF, a slide or a web page, cannot be pointed at your own webcam. For those you take a screenshot and read the image.
The screenshot method is the one most people need, and it works the same way on every laptop: capture the code, paste it into a scanner that reads images, and open the link on the computer you are already using.
A third option is your phone. Pointing a phone at the laptop screen works, but the link then opens on the phone. That is fine for a quick look, less useful when you need to sign in, fill in a form or download a file on the laptop.
How to scan a QR code on a Windows laptop
The Windows 11 Camera app only reads codes through the webcam. It will not read a code already on the screen or in an image file, which is why the screenshot route is worth knowing. In Chrome and Edge you can also right-click an image and search it with Google Lens or Visual Search, which can often pick out a QR code link.
- For a code on your screen, press Windows + Shift + S and drag a box around the QR code. The capture goes to the clipboard.
- Open a browser QR scanner, such as NeoReader's QR code scanner for PC, and press Ctrl + V to paste the screenshot.
- Check the link and the safety result, then open or copy it.
- For a printed code, open the Camera app in Windows 11, switch to the barcode or scan mode, and hold the code in front of the webcam. You can also use the camera option in a browser scanner.
How to scan a QR code on a Mac
macOS has no dedicated QR code reader. Photo Booth and FaceTime show the camera but ignore codes. You have three good options: a browser scanner on the Mac, your iPhone's Camera app pointed at the screen, or an iPhone screenshot synced to the Mac. The browser route keeps the link on the Mac, which is usually what you want.
- Press Cmd + Ctrl + Shift + 4 and drag around the code. The Ctrl key sends the screenshot to the clipboard instead of the desktop.
- Open a browser QR scanner in Safari, Chrome or Firefox and press Cmd + V.
- For a printed code, choose the camera option, allow webcam access and hold the code steady about 15 to 25 cm from the camera.
How to scan a QR code on a Chromebook
- For a printed code, open the Camera app and choose Scan. Select QR code if asked, then hold the code in front of the webcam. A link appears that you can open or copy.
- For a code on screen, press Ctrl + Shift + Show windows and drag around the code. ChromeOS saves the capture and also copies it to the clipboard.
- Open a browser scanner in Chrome and press Ctrl + V to paste the screenshot, or choose the file from your Downloads folder.
Using the webcam well
- Laptop webcams have fixed focus. If the code is blurry, move it further away rather than closer.
- Light the code from the front. A bright window behind it turns the code into a silhouette.
- Keep the code flat and square to the camera. Curved cups and bottles scan better if you rotate them slowly.
- A mirrored preview is normal. Scanners read codes either way round.
- If the camera does not start, close video call apps that may be using it and check the browser's camera permission.
Scanning QR codes on web pages

Check the link before you open it
A QR code hides its destination until you scan it, which is why scammers like them. On a laptop you have a large screen, so take a second to read the whole address.
