How to screenshot on a Lenovo laptop, ThinkPad or tablet
On a Lenovo laptop, press Windows + Shift + S to snip part of the screen, or Windows + PrtSc to save the full screen to Pictures\Screenshots. On many ThinkPads the PrtSc key sits on the bottom row between the right Alt and Ctrl keys; on IdeaPads it is usually on the top row.

Lenovo screenshot shortcuts
Lenovo's Windows laptops (ThinkPad, ThinkBook, IdeaPad, Yoga, Legion, LOQ) all use the Windows screenshot tools. The keyboard is where they differ, and Lenovo moves PrtSc around more than most makers.
- Windows + Shift + S: opens the snipping bar to capture an area, a window or the full screen. It is copied to the clipboard, and Windows 11 also saves it to Pictures\Screenshots by default.
- Windows + PrtSc: saves the full screen as a PNG to Pictures\Screenshots.
- PrtSc on its own: opens the snipping bar on current Windows 11 builds, or copies the full screen to the clipboard on Windows 10 (or if that setting is off).
- Alt + PrtSc: copies the active window to the clipboard.
Where is PrtSc on a ThinkPad?
For years ThinkPads have put PrtSc in an unusual place: the bottom row, between the right Alt key and the right Ctrl key, where other laptops have a menu key. Many T series, X series, E series and L series models use this layout, and it catches out people new to ThinkPads.
Some newer ThinkPads have moved it. On a number of recent models, particularly those with a Copilot key in that bottom-row spot, PrtSc is on the top row instead, sometimes shared with an F key. Lenovo varies the layout by model and generation, so look at the key legends on your own keyboard.
On ThinkPads with PrtSc in the bottom row, it is a key of its own and does not need Fn.
How to screenshot on a ThinkPad laptop
- Find PrtSc, either on the bottom row next to the right Alt key or on the top row.
- To save the whole screen as a file, press Windows + PrtSc. The screen dims briefly.
- To capture part of the screen, press Windows + Shift + S and drag over the area.
- Click the notification to crop or annotate it in the Snipping Tool, or paste it anywhere with Ctrl + V.
- Open File Explorer, then Pictures, then Screenshots, to find saved files.
IdeaPad, Yoga and Legion keyboards
IdeaPad, Yoga and Legion laptops usually put PrtSc on the top row towards the right, near Insert, Delete or Home. On some it is a key of its own, on others it is a secondary function on a shared key. Legion gaming laptops with a number pad often give it a dedicated key in the top-right cluster.
If the label is printed in a different colour or on the same key as another function, press Fn + PrtSc.
FnLock and hotkey mode on Lenovo laptops
Lenovo laptops let you choose whether the top row acts as F1 to F12 or as media keys. On ThinkPads, Fn + Esc toggles FnLock, and a small light on the Esc key shows when it is on. On IdeaPad and Yoga models this is often called hotkey mode, and on many you can change it with Fn + Esc or in the Lenovo Vantage app, or in the BIOS setup on others.
This matters for screenshots only when PrtSc shares a top-row key. If a shortcut worked yesterday and not today, FnLock was probably toggled. Press Fn + Esc and try again.
Lenovo Yoga 2-in-1s, tablets and Chromebooks
A Yoga or ThinkPad X1 convertible folded into tablet mode has no keyboard to hand. Pressing Power and Volume Up together takes a screenshot on many Windows 11 tablets; if yours does not respond, open the Snipping Tool and tap New, or use the pen if it came with one.
Lenovo Tab tablets run Android. Press Power and Volume Down together, and the screenshot goes to your Photos or Gallery app. Our Android guide covers scrolling screenshots and gestures.
Lenovo Chromebooks, including the IdeaPad Chromebook and Duet range, run ChromeOS. Press Ctrl + Show windows for the full screen or Ctrl + Shift + Show windows for an area; the Chromebook guide has the rest.
Screenshot a whole web page on a Lenovo
