Screenshot keyboard shortcuts for every device

The main screenshot shortcuts are Win + Shift + S on Windows, Cmd + Shift + 4 on a Mac and Ctrl + Shift + Show windows on a Chromebook, each of which lets you select part of the screen. Below is every shortcut for full screen, window, clipboard, recording and full page captures.

Windows 11 and Windows 10

Win is the Windows logo key. PrtScn may be printed as PrtSc, Prt Sc or PrtScr. On laptops where it shares a key, hold Fn too.

  • Win + Shift + S: select a rectangle, window, full screen or freeform area. Copied to the clipboard; Windows 11 also saves to Pictures\Screenshots.
  • PrtScn: Windows 10 copies the full screen to the clipboard. Windows 11 opens the snipping bar by default.
  • Win + PrtScn: save the full screen to Pictures\Screenshots.
  • Alt + PrtScn: copy the active window.
  • Win + Alt + PrtScn: Game Bar screenshot of the active app, saved to Videos\Captures.
  • Win + Alt + R: start or stop a Game Bar recording of the active app.
  • Win + G: open the Xbox Game Bar.
  • Win + V: clipboard history, once switched on in Settings, to paste earlier screenshots.
  • Win + Ctrl + O: On-Screen Keyboard, which has a PrtScn key if yours does not.

Mac

Mac keyboards have no Print Screen key. On a Windows keyboard plugged into a Mac, the Windows key acts as Cmd.

  • Cmd + Shift + 3: save the whole screen to the desktop.
  • Cmd + Shift + 4: drag to capture an area. Hold Space while dragging to move the selection.
  • Cmd + Shift + 4, then Space: capture a window. Hold Option when you click to drop the shadow.
  • Cmd + Shift + 5: Screenshot toolbar with timer, screen recording and save location.
  • Cmd + Control + Shift + 3 or 4: copy to the clipboard instead of saving a file.
  • Cmd + Shift + 6: capture the Touch Bar on MacBook Pro models that have one.
  • Cmd + Control + Esc: stop a screen recording.

Chromebook

  • Ctrl + Show windows: capture the full screen. Show windows is the key with a rectangle and two lines beside it, in the top row.
  • Ctrl + Shift + Show windows: open the screen capture bar for a partial, window or full screen capture, or a screen recording.
  • Ctrl + Alt + Show windows: capture a window.
  • Ctrl + F5: full screenshot with a keyboard not made for ChromeOS.
  • Power + Volume Down: screenshot in tablet mode.
  • Screenshots save to Downloads by default and are copied to the clipboard.

Linux (Ubuntu and GNOME)

  • PrtScn: open the screenshot tool to pick an area, window or screen.
  • Shift + PrtScn: capture the full screen straight away.
  • Alt + PrtScn: capture the current window.
  • Files save to Pictures/Screenshots and are copied to the clipboard. On KDE Plasma, PrtScn opens Spectacle instead.

Browser shortcuts, including full page screenshots

Operating system shortcuts capture only what is on screen. Browsers can capture a whole web page, top to bottom.

  • Chrome: there is no single shortcut. Press Ctrl + Shift + I (Cmd + Option + I on a Mac), then Ctrl + Shift + P (Cmd + Shift + P), type screenshot and choose Capture full size screenshot.
  • Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + S (Cmd + Shift + S on a Mac) opens Firefox's screenshot tool, with Save full page and Save visible.
  • Edge: Ctrl + Shift + S opens its screenshot tool, which can capture an area or the full page.
  • Safari: no screenshot shortcut. Use Web Inspector's Capture Screenshot, or File, then Export as PDF.

Screenshot extension shortcuts

A screenshot extension is the fastest route to a full page capture in Chrome, because one shortcut replaces the developer tools steps.   • iPhone with Face ID: Side button + Volume Up.
  • iPhone with a Home button: Side or Top button + Home.
  • iPad: Top button + Volume Up, or Top button + Home on models with a Home button.
  • Android, including Samsung Galaxy: Power + Volume Down.

Change or fix screenshot shortcuts

  • Mac: System Settings, then Keyboard, then Keyboard Shortcuts, then Screenshots. Change any shortcut or click Restore Defaults.
  • Windows 11: Settings, Accessibility, Keyboard controls whether PrtScn opens the snipping bar. Windows 10 has the same switch under Ease of Access, Keyboard.
  • Windows keyboard with no PrtScn: remap a spare key with Microsoft PowerToys Keyboard Manager.
  • A shortcut stopped working: another app, such as a cloud storage or screenshot tool, may have claimed it. Check that app's hotkey settings.
