NeoReader Read Aloud — Privacy Policy
Last updated: 24 September 2026
NeoReader Read Aloud ("the extension") is published by NeoReader, operator of neoreader.com. It is private by default: no account, no analytics, and no NeoReader server is involved in reading.
What the extension does with your data
- Page access only when you ask. The extension reads the current tab only when you use its
toolbar button, its right-click menu or a keyboard shortcut (the browser's
activeTabpermission). It works out which part of the page is the article inside your browser and highlights it there. - Voices. Speech is made by the voices your browser and operating system provide:
- On-device voices (for example most macOS, Windows and Linux system voices) make speech on your device.
- Online voices are marked "online voice" in the voice list. They are run by Google (Chrome's "Google …" voices) or Microsoft (Edge's "… Online (Natural)" voices). With one of these selected, the browser sends the sentence being read to that company's speech service, under that company's privacy policy. Choose an on-device voice if you don't want that.
- PDFs open in the extension's own reader page and are converted to text on your device. If the extension can't open a PDF's address itself, it asks for permission to read files from that site (you can refuse and pick the file from your computer instead).
- Settings (default voice, speed, pitch, highlighting) sync through your browser's own sync, if you have it turned on.
- Per-site memory. If "Remember voice and speed for each site" is on (the default), the extension
keeps a list of site names (e.g.
example.com) with the voice and speed you chose, on this device only (up to 300 sites). You can see and remove them in the extension's settings; turning the option off deletes the list.
Data we collect
None. The current version sends no analytics, telemetry, page text or browsing data to NeoReader.
Future AI voices
If optional AI voices are added later, they will be clearly labelled, off unless you choose them, and this policy will be updated before they ship to explain what is sent and to whom.
