How to scan a QR code without an app
On most phones you already have a QR scanner: open the Camera app, point it at the code and tap the link that appears. On a computer, or for a code in a screenshot, use a web scanner in your browser. You do not need to install anything.

Why you rarely need a QR code app now
A few years ago, scanning a QR code meant finding an app in the store. Many of those apps were stuffed with adverts, asked for permissions they did not need, or tracked what you scanned. Today, iPhones and most Android phones read QR codes in the camera, and any modern browser can run a scanner on a web page.
Skipping the app has two benefits beyond saving space. You are not handing scan history to a stranger's app, and you are not tempted by the look-alike scanner apps that turn up in app stores with vague privacy policies.
How to scan a QR code on iPhone without an app
You can also add the Code Scanner control to Control Centre. It opens a dedicated scanner that works in low light and opens links in a small preview rather than going straight to Safari.
- Open the Camera app and choose Photo mode.
- Point the camera at the QR code so the whole code is on screen.
- Tap the yellow link or notice that appears near the code.
- If nothing appears, check Settings, then Camera, and make sure Scan QR Codes is switched on.
How to scan a QR code on Android without an app
Android phones vary by maker, but nearly all of them have a built-in route. Try these in order.
- Open the Camera app and point it at the code. On many phones a link or a Google Lens suggestion appears.
- Swipe down to Quick Settings and look for a Scan QR code tile. If it is missing, edit the tiles to add it.
- Samsung Galaxy phones read codes in the Camera app and have a Scan QR code button in the quick panel.
- Google Lens, in the Google app or the Google search bar, reads codes from the camera or from a screenshot.
Use a QR web scanner in your browser
A QR web scanner is a web page that does what a scanner app does. Open it in your browser, allow the camera when asked, and point it at the code, or give it an image instead. It works on phones, tablets, laptops and desktops, including work computers where you cannot install software.

How to scan a QR code on a computer without an app
Computers are where a web scanner is most useful, because there is often no built-in option. On a Windows 11 laptop the Camera app can read codes held up to the webcam, and Chromebooks have a Scan mode in the Camera app. Macs have no built-in QR reader at all.

Scanning a QR code from a screenshot or photo
Your phone camera cannot scan its own screen. If someone sends you a code in a message, or you save one from a website, you need a method that reads images. Google Lens can do this from the gallery icon, and a web scanner lets you upload the screenshot directly.
Crop tightly around the code if the image is busy, and make sure the screenshot is not blurred or cut off at the edges. Our guide to scanning a QR code from a screenshot has more detail.
Check before you open
Built-in cameras show the address, but they do not judge it. Take a second to read the domain before you tap. Be careful with codes stuck over other codes, codes on parking meters and payment signs, and anything that asks you to sign in or pay straight away.
